SMP invests in a fully automated SDS filling line at its Tübingen facility

Tübingen, July 22, 2026

Automation, digitization, and maximum process reliability

With this investment, SMP is once again demonstrating its commitment to innovation, quality, and sustainable growth. At the same time, the company is strengthening its Tübingen laboratory site and laying the groundwork for more efficient, reproducible, and digitally supported processes.

SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate) is a key component of laboratory analyses conducted as part of the validation and requalification of cleaning processes for medical devices. The standardized 1% SDS solution is used to elute protein residues and enables the reliable, quantitative determination of residual contamination on medical devices. It thus forms an essential basis for the objective evaluation of cleaning performance and effectiveness and for ensuring proper reprocessing.

Maximum precision in filling

The new fully automatic filling system was designed specifically to meet the high demands of the laboratory environment. Its key features include:

  • High-precision filling
  • Filling bottles from the bottom to prevent foaming
  • Automated opening and closing of containers
  • Fully automatic labeling of containers
  • Cost-effective yet high-performance system technology

Automating critical process steps minimizes handling errors, further enhances product quality, and ensures consistently high process reliability.

Automation as a Strategic Success Factor

With the new system, SMP is meeting the growing demands for efficiency, traceability, and scalability in laboratory processes. The investment supports the continuous optimization of internal processes, strengthens quality standards, and enables the targeted allocation of resources to reliably meet the growing demand for high-quality laboratory services.

Strengthening Tübingen as a Business Hub

The new filling plant underscores SMP’s clear commitment to Tübingen as a laboratory location. Through investments in modern infrastructure and future-proof technologies, SMP is further expanding its position as a reliable partner for validations, requalifications, and routine testing in the healthcare sector, as well as for cleaning validations for medical device manufacturers.

Furthermore, in-house production of SDS enhances delivery capacity and supply security. Reduced dependence on external suppliers minimizes the risk of disruptions and allows production capacities to be flexibly adjusted to current demand.

With this investment, SMP combines technological innovation with the highest quality standards and lays the groundwork for even more efficient support of hospitals, RUMED, service providers, and medical device manufacturers in the safe reprocessing of medical devices.
